Is Wine Actually Healthy? What the Science Says
We've all heard it: a glass of red wine is good for your heart. The French Paradox. Resveratrol. It sounds like permission to drink more wine.
The reality is more nuanced. Here's an honest look at what we actually know about wine and health.
The Resveratrol Story
Resveratrol is a compound found in grape skins (and therefore in red wine) that has shown promising results in laboratory studies. It has antioxidant properties and has been linked to various potential health benefits in research settings.
However, here's the catch: the amounts used in studies are far higher than what you'd get from drinking wine. To get the resveratrol doses that showed benefits in research, you'd have to drink hundreds of glasses of wine daily. Which would obviously cause other problems.
The Honest Truth About Alcohol
Alcohol, regardless of the source, is not a health food. Recent research has been moving toward the conclusion that there's no amount of alcohol that's definitively "good" for you. The old idea that moderate drinking is protective has been challenged by newer, better-designed studies.
This doesn't mean wine is poison. It means we shouldn't drink it for health reasons. We should drink it because we enjoy it, in moderation, understanding that it's a pleasure with trade-offs.
What About Red vs. White?
Red wine does contain more potentially beneficial compounds (like resveratrol) than white wine, because red wine has extended contact with grape skins during production. But given that the amounts are small relative to what's been studied, this difference probably doesn't matter much in practical terms.
Quality Matters
One thing worth considering: not all wines are made the same way. Some mass-produced wines use additives like Mega Purple (a concentrated coloring agent) and various other processing aids. While these are generally considered safe, if you're thinking about what you're putting in your body, wines made with fewer interventions might appeal to you.
Look for wines from smaller producers, organic or biodynamic wines, or wines labeled "low intervention" or "natural" if this matters to you.
Moderation Means...
We're not going to give you a specific number of glasses per day. What's moderate for one person isn't moderate for another, and individual health situations vary widely. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor.
What we will say: if you're drinking wine mindfully, savoring it, and it enhances your meals and social occasions rather than being something you need to get through the day, you're probably in a good place.
A More Honest Framing
Wine isn't medicine and it isn't poison. It's one of humanity's oldest crafted beverages, deeply embedded in cultures around the world. The pleasure of a good glass of wine with a meal, shared with people you care about, is real. That doesn't require a health justification.
Enjoy wine for what it is. Don't rely on it for what it isn't.
